Ingredient lists can feel like a foreign language. Understanding a few basics can make choosing products calmer and more informed, without needing to become an expert.

What to know

Ingredients are usually listed in descending order of concentration, down to a certain threshold. The first few often make up most of the formula.

A single ingredient rarely tells the whole story. How a product is formulated, and how your skin responds to it, matters just as much.

A practical approach

When you look at a new product, ask a few questions: what is it meant to do, how should it be used, and is it suitable for how my skin feels today? If a product contains fragrance or ingredients you have reacted to before, take note.

Patch testing on a small area before regular use can help you check for discomfort. Your practitioner can also explain what is being used during a treatment and why.

Keep it personal

There is no single list of “good” or “bad” ingredients that suits everyone. What matters is what works comfortably for your skin.

Bring your products along to a consultation if you would like a second opinion on your current routine.
